Last Night in New Zealand... Again
Sandra = someone from high school
Gum boots = work boots I wore in NZ
Rick = project leader/guide in NZ
I was staying at a hostel. Theo was in my room and we had just gotten all our belongings settled. A random woman showed up because we apparently had to share the room with her. I moved some of my stuff out of the way so it wouldn't get confused with hers. At first, she made me kind of nervous but I eventually decided I really didn't mind sharing.
I was in the forest with my Aunt Pilar. A group of bikers went by us, and they were very noisily talking about levels and ratings for mountain biking. One of the bikers was Sandra, and she was saying something about how they were going to cut off her hair because it kept getting stuck in trees as she biked past them. I didn't know how mountain biking ratings worked, so after they had passed us, I went over to the tracks they were riding on to see if I could figure out the system. I walked up to one of them and realized it was a huge cliff, but you couldn't see that until you were right at the edge of it. I then decided that bikers must be completely insane to do stuff like that.
My aunt and I walked up to a house in the woods and went inside for a little while to talk. A dragon fly followed us in there. It was a really dark purple color and had yellow spots. It started following me around the room and it was kind of freaking me out so I tried to move it outside. I tried for a while and it didn't work, so I decided to kill it. I felt really bad about doing it, but my aunt assured me it was okay, so I smashed it. It curled up into a little ball and died... which made me feel horrible.
My aunt and I were now walking back to my apartment at Santa Cruz. The forest started to clear and opened up to the meadow. It was sunny out and both of us were saying how beautiful it was. We didn't have shoes on, and as we were walking through the meadow we noticed there were a lot of bugs. I was trying to avoid stepping on them, and was getting really freaked out by how many there were. Eventually we got to a place where the ground was covered in dead bugs, but it turned into grass that had a strange pattern on it, as if it were tile or marble. I thought this was really cool looking, so I layed down on my stomach and was moving the grass around with my hands. When I did this it would make more patterns but once I let go it would return to it's original state. Eventually I got back up and we kept walking, other people were now walking with us. When we got to the edge of the meadow it had started to rain. My aunt and I now had gum boots on our feet, as did everyone else who was walking out of the meadow. Everyone was taking off their gum boots and handing them to a guy who was collecting them and hosing them off. My aunt and I handed ours in, then left.
I was in a hostel with people from my NZ group. It was our last night before we went home, and everyone was congregating in a living room and a bottle of whisky was being passed around. I remember drinking some, but being worried about getting too drunk. Later on in the evening we found out that not everyone could fit on the bus to get a ride to the airport. I was upset about this and when I asked Rick about it, he said it was true. This really stressed me out, and I decided I was going to find a way to get on the bus.
